Technology Use Brainstorm
Moodle, Forum, Badges, hangouts, oh man.
A Moodle site and a forum would be the ultimate beginnings of the blended learning approach I want to create with my multimedia academy and classes. We have classes and students throughout the day that never come in contact with each other other than passing in the halls. For real collaboration across classes to happen we need a Moodle and a thriving forum.
I’ve been struggling with badges for so long now. I really want to implement them and start awarding them but it requires a completely new way of assessment, class structure, and then there is the technology of issuing them and supporting them. I know it’s something I need to just jump and iron out the kinks as I go but I just can’t make the leap. I need an assistant. It’s so hard doing all of this alone.
Moodle. I have a Moodle site finally working on one of our Academy servers! I have been trying to do this for years. Always starting, trying, and something always goes wrong or gets in the way of it working. It’s working, but I now have issues with it being accessible from both inside and outside our school network. It’s like I can do one but I can’t do the other. I’m almost there.
Forum. I don’t like Moodle forums. They are fine for individual assignments and units, but to create an online community of learners, you need threads and categories that stay open and are visible over time. Where discussions can be had and not closed when the unit is done. So I am now embarking on creating a forum. I have tried a number of free forums, and have been successful with getting a couple to work on our web server, but just don’t like the look and feel of them. One large issue is the posting of images by users. Some forums just can’t handle images or require users to go through a complicated upload, copy the URL, and then paste the URL into their post. This is crazy for student use. I’m still working on finding the best forum software for my classes.
Hangouts. Hangouts would be a perfect way to bring speakers into my classes or to our Academy from a distance. We could all get together in our theater and join a hangout together with an artist in their studio.
